Here's one of motoring's biggest mysteries. Why does the Mazda MX-5, the best selling sports car ever, have no rivals?

Perhaps it's in view of the fact that Guinness World Records has certified the iconic roadster as the world's highest-selling two-seat open-top sports car in history, with more than 850,000 units produced through to December 2008; a record which continues to grow every day.

Or maybe it's because of the more than 170 awards that the MX-5 has received globally since its launch in 1989, including 2005-2006 Japan Car of the Year and New Zealand Car of the Year in 2005.

Sure, there are bigger, more expensive sports cars but they miss the point.
